Why developers of all levels and backgrounds should attend Mendix World 2021

Mendix World 2021 showcases the possibilities of the Mendix platform and covers a wide range of functionality and concepts that can be essential for both new and veteran Mendix developers. If I’ve already won you over then register here (FOR FREE). If not, perhaps this blog in which I will be explaining the reasons why I, as a Mendix developer, am excited about this year’s Mendix World will persuade you to register for the largest low-code event of the year!

Mendix World is a place where a large assortment of developers, architects and business leaders gather to exhibit the power of Mendix development through many specialised sessions. The sessions can range from how to get started with Mendix, Expert development, industry solutions and much more. As a developer, there aren’t many sessions in which you wouldn’t get anything from! With that said, here are a few of the sessions I plan on attending for your inspiration…

Creating a REST service-heavy native app with a non-persistable domain model

If the title alone doesn’t interest you, I don’t know what else to say. The need for a native application combined with the Mendix platform has only recently entered my stratosphere. Consequently, I’m not as experienced in the field as I would like to be and so any knowledge I can gain is a positive I’m intrigued to understand how best to build a native mobile application that can utilise an organisation’s exisiting data sets without having to cache that data within the Mendix domain model.

Untangle the Excel jungle: Solving the process problem with Data Hub and Workflow

As we no doubt already know, digital transformation is a major contributor to Mendix engagements. What we may not know however is how Data Hub and Workflow enter the conversation as they are both fairly new developments for the Mendix platform. As a former developer of BPM solutions, mainly structured around the use of .NET, I know that a lot of what we had to do was bespoke to each customer. I’m interested to see how Workflow can simplify the process of creating solutions and to see if Data Hub helps centralise and assist in the creation of solutions with more generic business logic.

CTO Opening Keynote: Assemble the future with Mendix

The keynote on Tuesday that will kick of Mendix World 2021 is a must but I consider this CTO keynote as the one more catered toward developers. If you want to see an overview of the current and future features of Mendix then this is the place to see it. It may also inspire other sessions you’d like to attend following on from the announcements made in this keynote.

How to design high-quality user experiences with Atlas 3

If, like me, you find yourself stressing over the functionality and efficiency of your Mendix project only to discover the stakeholders are as concerned with the “colour of those buttons”… then maybe this is the session for you. UX/UI is often more important than the average developer would give it credit for. We have to consider the user experience throughout the whole of project development, otherwise there could be a lot of changes required once the functionality is squared away. But to do that you need to understand the tools at your disposal and Atlas UI is the very thing. Atlas 3 simplifies the design of the user experience by providing your ready built components out of the box, that does not mean however that you will assemble them in the best way. So I hope that this session can provide me with some tips and tricks should we ever be short of a UX/UI expert.

Automate critical business processes with Mendix Workflow

As mentioned before, the progress and development of the Workflow functionality is something I believe all Mendix developers should be taking notice of. It provides us with the ability to create business process solutions simply and efficiently whilst also leveraging the power of the low-code environment. The speed at which we are able to build these processes can far outmatch that of the more traditional BPM platforms. Something that will speed that up even more is automating those business processes and also provide value to the customer through dashboards and KPIs to display the impact the automated processes are having on their business.

Digitalizing liability, risk, and client onboarding in insurance with Corant Group

Of course, I can’t not mention the AuraQ session with Corant Group. Corant (global wholesale insurance and reinsurance broker) started using Mendix at the start of 2020. In this session, AuraQ’s Iain Lindsay (Technical Director) and Corant’s Peter Hughes (Group Head of Application Development) will talk through just some of the cool and innovative apps that have been delivered over the last 18 months. Of course, I know a little insider info on this one, and although I’m biased, I think you’ll be suitably impressed with just how much has been delivered in that time! No spoilers but operational cost savings of $120,000 plus, ROI delivered in less than 3 months and $1m + net earnings, this is one to tune into for a real-world use case on just how low-code can transform a business.

Creating and debugging Java actions

The low-code Mendix platform has created an environment where huge, complicated web services aren’t essential to maintain the optimisation and efficiency of the core application. There is, however, still space for more technical and bespoke code to be used when Mendix doesn’t yet have the ability to perform such actions. If you have come from a background of more technical development this session may inspire you to start thinking about creating custom Java actions to aid with your project development whilst maintaining a grip on those technical skills.

Have you signed up yet?

So, there it is. The reasons I believe that developers who are not considering attending Mendix World should maybe think again. Register here (did I say for free?) to attend and view all of the sessions available. Once you’ve decided on your favourite sessions, you can create your own personal Mendix World agenda which is a nice touch and great way to refine your shortlist!

I hope I’ve inspired you to attend or at least provoked interest in some of the above topics.

So, what are you waiting for? ASSEMBLE!!
